The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) passed a resolution on Tuesday using popular vote, in which Jerusalem is considered to be an Israeli-occupied city.
The draft of the resolution was presented by Germany and the European Union.
According to this report, Russia was the first country who voted in favor of this resolution. 22 other members of UNESCO’s executive board also voted in favor of the resolution and 10 countries including the U.S. voted against it.
This comes at a time when 23 countries abstained from voting.
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said in a statement. “Israel will not stand silently in the face of this shameful resolution.”
Earlier on Tuesday Before the resolution passed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish people and there are no other people in the world for whom Jerusalem is as holy and important as for the Jewish people.
Earlier on Oct 26, 2016, UNESCO stressed that Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to Muslims. The Israeli invasions of the old town of Jerusalem was also condemned in the resolution.
