Government of Maldives announced that it will launch a major investment projects aimed at luxury tourism with financial support from Saudi Arabia in a number of its islands.
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdul Aziz is going to visits Maldives in this month.
The Maldives Islands is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. The country has been experiencing political unrest since the ouster of Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, in 2012.
Nasheed opposition party announced this weekend that the mentioned project practically let a foreign power to dominate Maldivian archipelago the Faafu atoll.
In the meanwhile, the Maldives has witnessed popular protests against the project.
“Faafu is a part of an extensive and of multilateral program for financing a major billion-dollar investment project which includes constructing residential and luxury complexes, a large number of tourist centers, resorts and airports,” President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen said in a statement.
While Nasheed opposition party called the move by the Maldives government as the dominance of Saudi Arabia on islands. “The government rejects claims it is selling the mentioned atoll to any foreign regime,” said the office of Abdulla Yameen.
