(Baghdad, Iraq) — According to Iraqi-based al-Sharqiya news channel, Khaled Yassin al-Obaidi, the grim-faced Iraqi Defence Minister held a press conference yesterday in the Ministry of Defence building located in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone where he strongly criticized Mohammed al-Karbouli— a Sunni MP from the western Anbar province and head of the ‘Solution’ parliamentary bloc— and accused him of accepting $350 million from General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman and other American defence technology companies. Mr. al-Obaidi who himself adheres to Sunni Islam , said that it is imperative upon all Iraqis to not only confront Saudi-backed ISIS terrorists but also must eradicate chronic corruption among high-ranking officials in all its means and the ethnic sensitivities must not obstruct the course of justice.
“…al-Karbouli who is a member of the parliament’s security and defence committee traveled to the United States many times and during one of those trips he received $200 million in bribe and kickback payments from the American aerospace and defense company, General Dynamics, in order to persuade the Iraqi administration to buy more F-16 Fighting aircrafts manufactured by General Dynamics Co.,” Azzaman, a daily Iraqi newspaper quoted Iraqi defense minister as saying.
Our parliament must act swiftly and courageously, added al-Obaidi, and must revoke this person’s [ al-Karbouli] parliamentary immunity at once for this man has betrayed all Iraqis in this perilous moments when Iraq is facing this existential threat from ISIS terrorists.
The Iraqi Minister did not added for which particular reason Northrop Grumman Corporation paied al-Karbouli $150 million.
