The Jordanian newspaper’s sources divulged that the Jordanian minister allegedly delivered Saudi Arabia’s ultimatum to Egyptian officials according which Persian Gulf Coastal Countries (GCC) shall cease exporting crude oil and its products to Egypt if Cairo won’t comply with the already signed agreements regarding the transfer of sovereignty of two tiny albeit strategic Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to neighboring Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Amr al-Shobaki, the senior expert at al-Ahram Study Center in Cairo believes that Saudi Arabia’s irrational desire to possess these two islands [Sanafir and Tiran] can be interpreted in the light of a young Saudi Prince’s ambitious fantasies for KSA. Muhammad bin Salman, the deputy crown prince and Saudi Arabia’s youngest war minister cherishes his so-called “2030 Vision” in which Sanafir and Tiran have a substantial role to boost Saudi Arabia’s ailing economy. “…it is imperative that we should not ignore Israeli sinister role too. Tel Aviv directly asked Saudi regime to lay her hands on Tiran and Sanafir in order to eliminate any threat posed against the security of Israeli maritime in the Red Sea and annihilate once and for all any threat against the Israeli southern port of Elat, Israel still remembers painfully how Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the strait of Tiran on Israeli ships,” al-Dostur quoted al-Shobaki as saying.
In late January 2017, President Sisi in unprecedented remarks said that Egypt won’t bow to any entity except God, the Almighty, and the Egyptian dignity is something beyond price. It is clearly seems that Egypt did not stand idle vis-à-vis the Saudi condescending manner and widely disparaging threats. Egypt began talks with Iraqi administration of Prime Minister Haidar al-Ebadi to substitute Saudi oil and thus we can understand the timing of Saudi foreign minister’s visit to Iraq intending to dissuade the Iraqis to do business with Cairo by luring them with the idea that KSA will convince her ally neighbor Kuwait ,to accept Iraqi sovereignty over the disputed Khour-Abdullah oil field.
