Nudity, Drugs, Rape, and Betrayal: The Scandals that have Plagued the British Royals from Prince Harry to Others

COKE abuse, ‘it’ girls, nudity in Las Vegas, rehab and racism controversies — not everyone in the British royal family has a tightly controlled public image.

From Prince Harry to Fergie and even Pippa Middleton’s soon-to-be brother-in-law Spencer Matthews, some royals — and those in extended royal circles — have engaged in scandalous, headline-making behaviour.

These are some of the most controversial identities in (and connected to) the British royal family.

PRINCE HARRY

Smoking pot, wearing a shirt featuring a Nazi swastika, a brawl with the paparazzi, and a string of high-profile conquests — most recently, Suits actor Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry, 32, has definitely not been one to toe the royal family line.

The youngest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana has a longstanding a party boy reputation.

In 2005, Harry was forced to apologise after wearing a Nazi uniform to a party.

“I am very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise,” Harry said.

Now, he has left his wild days behind him.

“I always feel like I need to make something of my life,” the loved-up royal said in a doco released last year, according to the BBC.

“I was fighting the system, going ‘I don’t want to be this person — my mother died when I was very, very young and I don’t want to be in this position.

“But now I’m just so fired up and energised to be lucky enough to be in a position to make a difference.”

FERGIE

There was one scandal after another for former royal Sarah Ferguson (aka “Fergie” and the Duchess of York) in the 90s who, even during her time as an actual royal, seemed to have an anti-royal image.

She was married to Prince Andrew from 1986-1996.

In 1992, Fergie was photographed having her toes sucked poolside in the South of France by her then-financial adviser, John Ryan (she and Prince Andrew were separated at the time).

Then, Fergie made headlines in 2010, when she was caught on video making a deal with the News of the World to offer access to her ex-husband in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars.

Though she is the mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and was close to the late Princess Diana, Fergie was not invited to William and Kate’s wedding.

Wonder why.

TARA PALMER-TOMKINSON

The British socialite and party girl, dubbed an It girl by Tattler, was close to Prince Charles, as well as Wills and Harry, and the late Princess Diana.

Palmer-Tomkinson, who died aged 45 from a brain tumour, was a notorious “it” girl of the 2000s, penning newspaper columns about her social exploits and was known simply as “TPT”.

When asked to define her it girl status in a British radio interview, Palmer-Tomkinson said the press “definitely created a person who was from some kind of breeding, was on the vortex of some sort of London society, and going to everything, self-indulgence, fun at parties, pretty mischievous ... but you end up in rehab”.

The Naughty Girl’s Guide To Life author was open about her cocaine addiction and subsequent rehab stints, undergoing surgery to repair a collapsed septum in 2006, and was arrested for public drunkenness at Heathrow Airport in 2014.

Though Palmer-Tomkinson remained close to the royals.

She went on family skiing holidays with them, supported the princes when their mother Princess Diana died, and referred to Prince Charles as “one of the kindest, most generous men in my life”, The Sun reported.

But she rarely spoke about her close friendship with the royals publicly.

Despite being widely reported that TPT was Prince Charles’ goddaughter, she was actually a close family friend (her father, former Olympic skier Charles Palmer-Tomkinson, taught him how to ski).

SPENCER MATTHEWS

And you thought Prince Harry was the royal bad boy.

He’s dashing, charming and has a thing for “petite brunettes” — meet Pippa Middleton’s future brother-in-law, Spencer Matthews.

The former Made In Chelsea playboy has a reputation for being a prolific ladies’ man, preference for “petite brunettes” and lapping up the attention he got from women — even when he had a girlfriend — during an interview with News Corp Australia.

But how will this charismatic playboy fit in with the royal family?

Pippa Middleton, 32, is engaged to Spencer’s brother, James Matthews, 40, a multi-millionaire hedge-fund manager and one of the British social scene’s most eligible bachelors.

Spencer confessed to sleeping with more than 1000 women.

“I just have an unhealthy appetite for sex,” he told The Sun, according to New York magazine.

The former banker-turned-reality-star was last year outed for steroid use, which forced him to leave the UK series of I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here.
